As a tribute to this episode, Time magazine has put together a list of  puma speed cat products with notoriously misleading advertising claims. The entire list makes for interesting reading but I will highlight a few here for this post.

This revelation, however, did not impact sales. The advent of the FDA later on led to a change of formula; no alcohol
In India too, such instances are not unheard of. Here is an interesting blog post about misleading claims in India. The difference between US and India is that currently, in India companies are let off with a warning or an order to revise the advertisement from the voluntary body ‘Advertising Standards Council of India’ (to whom consumers can make complaints) rather than a monetary slap or legal action
The Government and the legal systems in India need to be more proactive toward consumer protection, given the spurt in consumerism in India in the last decade. A recent news article did say that the Government is working on stringent laws. Hopefully it will happen sooner than later
Where false claims relate to essentials like medicines or products that are technical in nature like power saving refrigerators and eco nike sb dunk low friendly washing machines or even financial products, we do need the Government to protect U.S.. But melting off creams and toning horseshoes? Authentically
